Remove and repair skin cancers with Mohs surgery
Mohs Micrographic Surgery is used to remove skin cancers that grow by direct extension in the skin and can be recognized under the microscope. It is the treatment of choice for skin cancer where a high cure rate and maximum preservation of tissue is important. This treatment is indicated for large cancers, recurrent cancers or those cancers with aggressive growth patterns. It is particularly effective for sensitive areas like the nose, ears and around the eyes.
During treatment with Dr. Arlette:
- The affected area is given a local anaesthetic
- The tissue around the obvious cancer is excised with a scalpel
- The tissue is divided and processed into slides
- The tissue is examined under a microscope for the presence of cancer
- If cancer is detected on the edges of the tissue, another layer of tissue is removed
- Further tissues are removed and examined until no more cancer can be found
- Dr. Arlette repairs the surgical defect once the cancer is completely removed
